The Wall Begins.
The Berlin Wall went up on August 13th, 1961.
People woke to find themselves divided by barbed wire from neighbours
on the other side of the street. They were unable to cross the road to visit them. There had been no warning that the East Berlin Communist authorities
were about to erect the wall, or that West Berlin was going to be isolated from the rest of East Germany.
Western forces responded to the wall's construction with an increase in troop presence in West Berlin, enforcing the point that they were there to stay.
There is no hook in this cartoon as it was actually done when Jeff was working at "The Mercury".
