It was the fifty eighth year of peaceful marches that commemorated the bravery and resilience of Australian and New Zealand soldiers in WW1 as well of those in WW11 and later conflicts.
Countrywide there was division over the Vietnam War at this time. Dr. Jim Cairns ,who later in 1972 became a minister in the Labor Whitlam Government chaired the Vietnam Moratorium mass marches which were in the main peaceful, but occasionally resulted in aggressive anti-American sentiment been demonstrated by some particpants.
