End of the road...
Labor Prime Minister Bob Hawke included the car industry and it's
problems in the election campaign which he won in 1983.
In 1984 Labor Senator John Button made a Senate address on
29th May and followed his steel industry plan with "The Button Plan"
for successful competitive and efficient car manufacture.
Rather than trying to prop up the troubled industry, he proposed
a reduction of the number of models, standardised
components, tariffs to be reduced over a time period
and also facilitation of exports, $150 million for Research and
Development and retraining for workers who lost their jobs.
