A new Speaker of the House.
Joan Child, Labor Member for Henty, became the first female Speaker of the House of Representatives on 11th February, 1986 until 28th August, 1989.
She had first been elected in 1974 as the first Labor woman member of the House. She was responsible for the overseeing of the move from the Provisional Parliament House to the new Parliament House and due to her firm direction the Traditional Speaker's Chair remained in the old Parliament House to be preserved in it's historical place.
